Exterior Wall Painting Before Diwali: Cost and Timing Guide

Start in the first week of October. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November, with Dhanteras on 6 November, and an exterior job fills a week or more once you count surface repair plus the primer and two colour coats, each needing drying time before the next. That puts the finish line in late October with a few days to spare. The reason you cannot start earlier is the rain. The southwest monsoon runs June to September, and Berger Paints notes that painting outside walls during it traps moisture behind the film. Wait for the rain to stop, then give the plaster time to dry out from the inside. October is the sweet spot in Gurgaon: the rain has gone, humidity has dropped, and the day-to-night temperature swing is still small. Berger points to winter, and November in particular, as the season with the least temperature fluctuation. One practical note: crews get booked out by mid-October, so lock your painter in September even if the work starts a month later. Budget ₹18 to ₹50 per sq ft of wall area for Delhi NCR as of 2026, according to Asian Paints. The spread is wide because it covers everything from a single-coat refresh to a premium weatherproof system. Houseyog's 2026 rate data splits it further: ₹15 to ₹25 per sq ft for a basic exterior job, ₹25 to ₹40 for premium. Labour on its own runs ₹6 to ₹10 per sq ft, rising to ₹8 to ₹12 in metro cities. In rupee terms, Houseyog puts the exterior walls of a 2BHK at ₹20,000 to ₹30,000, with a full home job covering interiors, ceilings and exteriors landing between ₹80,000 and ₹1,00,000. Materials eat 55 to 65 percent of a paint budget and labour takes 35 to 45 percent, per Asian Paints, though economy jobs run closer to a 50-50 split. Get the quote in writing as a per sq ft rate with the wall area stated, not a lump sum. Lump sums hide how much surface the painter actually counted. Work the area out yourself before the painter arrives: perimeter times height, then subtract windows and balconies. A three-storey builder floor on a 30 by 40 foot plot has a 140 foot perimeter and stands roughly 33 feet, so about 4,600 sq ft gross and near 3,700 sq ft after openings.

Three things push the outside rate above the inside rate: the paint itself, the prep, and getting to the wall. Asian Paints puts Delhi interiors at ₹12 to ₹35 per sq ft against ₹18 to ₹50 for exteriors, a gap of roughly ₹6 to ₹15 per sq ft. Weather-grade exterior emulsion carries UV-stable resins and biocides that an interior emulsion does not need, so it costs more per litre. Outside walls also arrive dirtier: they need washing, algae removal, crack filling and a full primer coat before any colour goes on. Then there is access. A ground-floor boundary wall takes a ladder, but a three-storey builder floor in Palam Vihar needs scaffolding or rope access, and that time sits inside the labour line of the quote. Walk the outside of the house before you book anyone, and look for four things: green algae streaks under window sills, black fungus patches in shaded corners, hairline cracks in the render, and blistered paint where water has been sitting. Paint applied over any of these fails within a season. Algae and fungus are the usual failure cause on Indian exteriors, and Aapkapainter points to paints with built-in biocides, such as Apex Ultima Protek, as the counter. Growth still has to be scrubbed off first, because biocides stop new growth rather than kill an existing colony. Cracks are the bigger tell. A hairline crack takes filler, but a crack that reappears in the same line every year is usually a structural or waterproofing problem, and paint will not hold it shut. Gurgaon needs paint built for heat and UV, not damp. Dulux Weathershield Max bridges cracks up to 0.75 mm, which covers the hairline cracking common on 15-year-old render. Its SunReflect pigments cut wall temperature by up to 5 degrees, per Dulux, which shows up on the west-facing wall that heats through the afternoon. The arithmetic is simple: paint that chalks in 3 years needs three repaints in the time a 9-year system needs one.

Five years is the floor. Berger Paints states an exterior paint job lasts at least five years, and over 10 years without a retouch when quality paint is used. Dulux India quotes a general repaint interval of 5 to 7 years, then splits its own range by grade: Weathershield Protect at 6 years, Weathershield Max at up to 9 years, and Weathershield Powerflexx at up to 12 years. Those numbers assume the surface was prepared properly and the paint was applied in dry weather, which is the whole argument for the October window. Paint the same wall in August humidity and the film cures slowly, stays soft, and picks up dust and dew marks, per Berger. Two questions to put to your contractor before signing. First, does the paint carry a written manufacturer warranty, and for how many years? Berger references a 10-year warranty on its products. Second, does the quote include the exterior primer coat? Dropping primer is the quickest way for a contractor to shave a quote, and it is also the quickest way to lose four years of that warranty life. Warranty claims usually need the batch numbers and the purchase invoice, so keep the paint bills filed until the cover runs out.

Light shades carry two advantages in Gurgaon: they reflect heat and they read as fresh under festival lighting. Terracotta, deep green and charcoal all hold up as trim colours because the trim area is small enough that heat gain does not matter. One field check before you commit: paint a one-metre square patch on the wall that gets the most afternoon sun, and look at it at 11am, 4pm and after dark under your outdoor light. The standard exterior system is one primer coat plus two colour coats, per Asian Paints, with premium finishes sometimes needing an extra coat. To size the order, measure the outside wall area rather than working off carpet area: length times height for each face, minus windows and doors. Then double it, because two coats cover the same surface twice.
