Primer, Putty, and POP: What Goes on Your Wall First?

·5 mins read

Why Wall Preparation Matters More Than Paint

You can buy the most expensive paint in the market, but if your wall isn't properly prepared, the result will be disappointing. Cracks, uneven surfaces, and poor adhesion all come from skipping or rushing wall prep. The correct layering sequence is: POP (Plaster of Paris) for leveling, putty for smoothing, and primer for adhesion. Each layer serves a distinct purpose.

Step 1: POP (Plaster of Paris) — The Leveller

POP is applied to raw plastered walls to fill large undulations, cracks, and uneven patches. It's mixed with water to form a paste and applied in a thin layer (2-4mm). POP dries quickly (30-60 minutes) and is then sanded smooth. Not every wall needs POP — if the plastering is already smooth and level, you can skip this step. But for older walls or rough plaster, POP is essential.

Step 2: Wall Putty — The Smoother

Wall putty creates the ultra-smooth surface that paint adheres to. Two coats of putty are standard — the first coat fills minor imperfections, the second creates a uniform, glass-smooth finish. Each coat needs 6-8 hours of drying time and light sanding between coats. Popular brands include Birla White, JK Wall Putty, and Asian Paints Wall Putty. White cement-based putty is preferred over acrylic putty for most applications.

Step 3: Primer — The Binder

Primer is the critical bridge between putty and paint. It seals the putty, prevents paint from being absorbed unevenly, and ensures uniform colour coverage. Without primer, you'll need 30-40% more paint and the finish will still look patchy. One coat of primer (diluted 1:1 with water) is standard. Use water-based primer for emulsions and solvent-based primer for enamels. Asian Paints Decoprime and Berger Bison Primer are top choices.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping primer is the most common mistake — it seems like an unnecessary extra step but saves paint and dramatically improves finish. Applying putty on a damp wall leads to peeling. Not sanding between putty coats creates a rough texture. Using external putty inside (or vice versa) reduces durability. HandyPanda delivers POP, wall putty, and primers from all major brands across Gurgaon in under 60 minutes.
