False Ceiling Materials: Gypsum, POP, or Grid?

·5 mins read

Gypsum Board Ceilings

Gypsum boards (Gyproc by Saint-Gobain is the leading brand) are the most popular choice for residential false ceilings in Gurgaon. They offer a smooth, uniform finish, are dimensionally stable, and can be installed relatively quickly. Gypsum boards are available in 12.5mm and 15mm thickness. They can be shaped into curves and multiple levels for designer ceilings. Cost: Rs 65-90 per sq ft (installed) for a basic flat ceiling. Drawback: not suitable for high-moisture areas without moisture-resistant variants.

POP (Plaster of Paris) Ceilings

POP ceilings are created by applying plaster directly to a metal framework. They offer unlimited design flexibility — any shape, curve, or profile is possible. POP is cheaper than gypsum for simple flat ceilings (Rs 55-75 per sq ft installed) but more labour-intensive and dependent on the plasterer's skill. Drying time is longer than gypsum board installation. POP is still popular in Gurgaon for decorative and designer ceilings.

Grid/T-Bar Ceilings

Grid ceilings use a visible metal framework (T-bar) with drop-in tiles — mineral fibre, gypsum, or metal. They're the standard for offices, commercial spaces, and utility areas. Advantages: easy access to wiring and plumbing above the ceiling, modular replacement of damaged tiles, and acoustic insulation options. Not commonly used in residential living spaces due to the industrial look, but practical for server rooms and home offices.

Which Should You Choose?

For living rooms and bedrooms: Gypsum board — clean finish, moderate cost, and good for cove lighting. For designer/curved ceilings: POP — unlimited shapes. For bathrooms: Moisture-resistant gypsum board or PVC panels. For home offices: Grid ceiling for easy access. For kitchens: Gypsum board (moisture-resistant variant) or PVC ceiling.
