When Should You Repaint?
Most interior paints last 4-6 years before they start looking dull, stained, or develop cracks. In Gurgaon's climate, walls near windows may fade faster due to UV exposure. Signs you need to repaint: visible stains that won't wash off, hairline cracks, peeling or flaking, damp patches (fix the cause first), or simply wanting a fresh look. Repainting is the most impactful renovation you can do for the least cost.
Step 1: Choose Your Colours
Use paint company visualizer tools (Asian Paints ColourNext, Berger Colour App) to preview colours on your actual walls using phone photos. Order small testers (200ml) of your top 2-3 choices and paint sample patches on different walls — colours look very different in natural light vs artificial light, and on different walls of the same room. Live with the samples for 2-3 days before deciding.
Step 2: Hire the Right Painter
In Gurgaon, painter labour rates range from Rs 12-25 per sq ft depending on the scope (basic repaint vs full putty and POP). Ask for references and check previous work if possible. A good painter will inspect walls, recommend the right preparation level, and give you an honest material estimate. Buy materials yourself rather than letting the painter source them — this prevents markup and ensures genuine products.
Step 3: Wall Preparation
For a basic repaint (walls in good condition): light sanding, one coat primer, two coats paint. For walls with minor issues: spot putty on cracks and patches, full primer coat, two coats paint. For walls in poor condition: full POP and putty (two coats), sanding, primer, two-three coats paint. The preparation level determines 70% of the final result — don't skip steps to save a few thousand rupees.
Step 4: Protect and Prepare the Room
Cover all furniture with plastic sheets or old bedsheets. Remove switchboard covers and light fixtures. Apply masking tape on window frames, door frames, and edges where different colours meet. Cover flooring with old newspapers or drop cloths. Remove curtains and curtain rods. The 30 minutes spent on preparation saves hours of cleanup.
Step 5: Painting and Finishing
Apply primer first and let it dry (4-6 hours). First coat of paint — apply evenly with roller for walls and brush for edges and corners. Let dry (4-6 hours minimum, overnight is better). Second coat — this is the finish coat, so take extra care with evenness. For ceilings, always paint the ceiling first, then walls. Total time for a 2BHK: 5-8 days. HandyPanda delivers all paint materials across Gurgaon in 60 minutes.
