Core Structure: Plywood
The skeleton of any modular kitchen is plywood. Use 19mm BWR plywood for all cabinet carcasses — the steam and moisture in a kitchen will destroy MR grade plywood within a year or two. Use 12mm BWR for internal shelves and 6mm for back panels. For a standard 10-foot straight kitchen: ~8-12 sheets. For an L-shaped kitchen: ~15-22 sheets. For a U-shaped kitchen: ~20-30 sheets.
Surface Finish: Laminates or Paint
Laminate finish: 0.8mm high-pressure laminates from Merino, Greenlam, or Century. You'll need enough to cover all visible surfaces — shutters, side panels, and visible carcass edges. PU/DUCO paint finish: requires MDF shutters, primer, and multiple coats of PU paint. Painted kitchens look more premium but cost 30-50% more than laminate. Acrylic shutters are another premium option.
