The Three Materials at a Glance
Plywood is made from thin wood veneers glued together in alternating grain directions — strong, durable, and the gold standard for furniture. MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard) is made from fine wood fibres compressed with resin — smooth, uniform, and excellent for painted finishes. Particle board is made from wood chips and sawdust bonded with resin — the cheapest option but the weakest and least moisture-resistant.
Plywood: The Premium Choice
Plywood is the strongest of the three, holds screws well, and comes in moisture-resistant grades (BWR, Marine). It's the best choice for kitchen cabinets, wardrobes, bed frames, and any structural furniture. Drawback: it's the most expensive and has a visible layered edge that needs edge banding or veneer finishing. CenturyPly and Greenply are top brands.
MDF: Smooth and Versatile
MDF has a perfectly smooth surface that takes paint beautifully — no grain, no knots, no patches. This makes it ideal for painted shutters, decorative panels, carved profiles (like shaker-style doors), and display shelving. Drawback: MDF is weaker than plywood, doesn't hold screws as well (especially at edges), and swells badly if exposed to water. Never use MDF in kitchens or bathrooms.
Particle Board: Budget Option
Particle board is significantly cheaper than plywood and MDF. It's used in budget furniture, temporary fixtures, and applications where strength isn't critical — like shelf backing, drawer bottoms, and non-load-bearing panels. Pre-laminated particle board is common in modular furniture. Drawback: very poor moisture resistance, weak screw holding, and limited lifespan.
Making the Right Choice
For kitchen cabinets: BWR plywood (no exceptions). For wardrobe carcass: MR or BWR plywood. For wardrobe shutters: MDF if painted, plywood if laminated. For study table and shelving: plywood or MDF depending on finish. For budget furniture: pre-laminated particle board.
