How to Choose Construction Adhesive for Different Surfaces

·4 mins read

Wood to Wood: Fevicol SH

For bonding wood to wood in furniture — plywood joints, edge banding, and laminate application — Fevicol SH (synthetic resin adhesive) is the undisputed standard in India. For moisture-prone areas (kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities), use Fevicol Marine or Fevicol Heatx which offer water and heat resistance respectively. Apply to both surfaces, press together, and clamp for 12-24 hours.

Tile to Wall/Floor: Cementitious Tile Adhesive

Standard cementitious adhesive for ceramic tiles, polymer-modified adhesive for vitrified and porcelain tiles. Brands: Roff, MYK Laticrete, Weber. Apply with a notched trowel (6mm notch for wall tiles, 10mm for floor tiles, 12mm for large-format tiles). Always back-butter large tiles for 100% coverage.

Sealing Joints: Silicone and MS Polymer

Silicone sealant for bathroom joints (bathtub-wall, washbasin-wall, glass shower panel joints). MS polymer sealant for expansion joints and external weatherproofing — it's paintable, UV-resistant, and more flexible than silicone. Brands: Dr. Fixit, Sika, Dow Corning. Always use a sealant gun for clean, controlled application.

Metal, Stone, and Mixed Materials: Epoxy

Two-component epoxy adhesives (Araldite, Pidilite M-Seal) create extremely strong bonds between dissimilar materials — metal to concrete, stone to stone, and repair applications. Epoxy anchoring chemicals (Hilti, Fischer) are used for fixing bolts and rebar into concrete. Use epoxy sparingly and precisely — it's permanent and very strong.
