Why Tile Adhesive Over Cement Mortar?
Traditional cement-sand mortar requires a thick bed (12-20mm) and skilled application. Modern tile adhesives need only a 3-6mm layer, provide stronger bonding, cure faster, and are far more consistent. For vitrified tiles, porcelain tiles, and large-format tiles, adhesive is not optional — cement mortar simply doesn't bond well enough to low-porosity surfaces.
Cementitious Tile Adhesives
The most common type. These come as dry powder that you mix with water on-site. Standard cementitious adhesives (like Roff RF101) work for most ceramic tiles on walls and floors. Modified cementitious adhesives (like Roff Setflex or MYK Laticrete 335) contain polymers for stronger bonding — essential for vitrified tiles, porcelain tiles, and tiles in wet areas like bathrooms and balconies.
Epoxy Tile Adhesives
Epoxy adhesives are the strongest option, providing chemical resistance and waterproof bonding. They're used in swimming pools, commercial kitchens, hospitals, and areas exposed to chemicals. For most residential applications in Gurgaon, standard or modified cementitious adhesives are sufficient — epoxy is overkill and significantly more expensive.
Choosing by Tile Type
Ceramic tiles (wall): Standard cementitious adhesive. Ceramic tiles (floor): Standard or modified cementitious. Vitrified tiles: Modified cementitious with polymer (mandatory). Large-format tiles (60x60cm+): Flexible modified adhesive with higher open time. Natural stone: Stone-specific adhesive to prevent staining. Glass mosaic: White modified adhesive to prevent colour showing through.
