Geyser Light On but Water Cold: What Is Wrong?
Switch the geyser on and look at the light.
- No light. Power does not reach the geyser. Check the switch, the 16 A plug and the MCB.
- Light on, water still cold after 30 minutes. The geyser gets power, but the element or the thermostat has failed. The element is the metal rod that heats the water. The thermostat switches it off when the water is hot.
- Water only warm. Scale on the element, or the thermostat is set low.
Racold, a geyser maker, says hard water scale can stop the thermostat and can burn out the element. An electrician switches off the MCB and tests the element with a multimeter. Parts on HandyPanda as of 5 November 2026:
- Tikona (triangle) element: ₹329. Round element: ₹350.
- Racold element, 2 kW: ₹885. Bajaj element: ₹917.
- Geyser thermostat: ₹130.

Take the old element with you, so the flange shape and watts match.
Why Does the Hot Water Run Out So Fast?
Usually the tank is too small for the number of baths. A bathroom bucket holds 16 L to 18 L. By our calculation, a 15 L tank at 60 °C mixed with 15 °C tap water gives about 27 L at 40 °C, or one and a half buckets. You get a little less, because cold water flows into the tank as hot water leaves.
The tank then takes about 16 minutes to heat again at 2000 W. So when four people bathe back to back, the third or fourth person often gets lukewarm water. On the TechEnclave forum, one Delhi user wrote: "In peak Delhi winter, I feel 25L is a must if one wants a proper shower." The same user adds that this applies for only 2 to 3 months.
Before you buy a bigger geyser, check the thermostat knob. If it is low, turn it up. If it is already high, check the element for scale.
Geyser Me Current Kyu Aata Hai? Shock From the Tap or Body
A shock from the geyser body, the tap or the shower water means current is leaking and has no safe path to the ground. Haier India lists the causes: a failed part, damaged insulation, poor earthing or leakage current. A cracked element puts current into the water. A loose or missing earth wire lets that current reach you.
This is not a small problem. In a January 2026 complaint, a Hyderabad customer wrote that a Crompton geyser began to leak after a coil change. A family member switched it on and "got current shock", and was taken to hospital. This is one user's account.
If you feel even a light tingle:
- Stop using the geyser and switch it off at the MCB, not only at the wall switch.
- Ask an electrician to test the earth wire and the element.
- Ask for an RCCB on the bathroom line. Haier says a residual current device breaks the circuit when current leaks.
Why Does the Geyser Keep Tripping the MCB?
There are three common causes.
- Current leaks from the element. A cracked element lets current into the water. A large leak trips the MCB. A small leak trips only an RCCB; a plain MCB does not detect it. A new element fixes the leak.
- Too much load on one line. In winter, a room heater often runs on the same line. By our calculation, a 2000 W geyser draws about 8.7 A (2000 ÷ 230) and a 2000 W room heater another 8.7 A. Together that is 17.4 A, more than a 16 A MCB carries.
- The geyser's own safety cut-out trips. On TechEnclave, a user wrote that an old Racold "trips after every cycle of heating and needs to be reset". A new thermostat made it work "as new".
Do not keep resetting the MCB. Unplug the room heater first. If the MCB still trips with only the geyser on, call an electrician. Our MCB rating guide explains which MCB goes on which line.
Why Is the Geyser Leaking From the Bottom or the Safety Valve?
Find where the water comes from.
- From a pipe nut. The joint is loose or the connection pipe is old. Wrap Teflon tape on the thread, or fit a new steel braided connection pipe (₹80 for 18 inch as of 5 November 2026).
- From the safety valve, a few drops while heating. Water grows as it heats. By our calculation, 15 L grows by about 0.24 L from 15 °C to 60 °C. The valve lets this out. A few drops during heating are the valve doing its job.
- From the safety valve, all the time. The inlet pressure is too high or the valve is faulty. Call a plumber.
- From the bottom of the body or the element plate. The tank or the element gasket has failed.
A leak near the element is also a shock risk. Switch off the MCB and close the angle valve on the cold line before anyone touches it.
Geyser Kab Fatta Hai? Can an Electric Geyser Burst?
Yes, it can. On 7 February 2026, an electric geyser exploded in a house in Hazrat Nizamuddin, south-east Delhi, and started a fire. The Tribune reported that a 50-year-old man died and his wife was injured. The report gives no cause for the explosion.
Here is how a storage geyser is kept safe. The thermostat switches the element off when the water is hot. If the thermostat sticks, the water keeps heating and the pressure in the tank rises. The safety valve then lets water out to bring the pressure down. A burst needs both to fail.
So watch for these signs:
- Water much hotter than usual, or steam from the tap.
- A boiling or hissing sound from the tank.
- A safety valve that never drips while heating, or one that someone has plugged.
If you see any of them, switch the geyser off at the MCB and call an electrician. Never plug or cap the safety valve to stop a drip.
Is It Safe to Bathe With the Geyser On? How Long to Keep It On?
Switching it off before you bathe adds safety, but it does not fix a fault. Haier India says: "Switching off a geyser before bathing is an additional precaution, not a guarantee against electric shock." Bad wiring or poor earthing stays dangerous with the switch off. Only an electrician can fix that.
How long to keep it on (geyser kitni der chalana chahiye) depends on the tank and the watts. By our calculation, heating 15 L from 15 °C to 45 °C needs about 0.52 kWh. A 2000 W geyser gives 2 kWh in an hour, so this takes about 16 minutes. In practice, switch it on about 20 minutes before the first bath.
You do not need to keep the geyser on all morning. Once the water is hot, the thermostat switches the element off. The geyser then only reheats the water when the tank loses heat or when you use it. Switch it off after the last bath.
Geyser Kitni Bijli Khata Hai? Units Per Day in Winter
One unit on your electricity bill is 1 kWh. A 2000 W geyser that runs for one full hour uses 2 units.
Here is a winter estimate for a family of four, by our calculation:
- Each bath uses one 15 L tank of hot water.
- Heating one tank from 15 °C to 45 °C takes about 0.52 unit.
- Four baths take about 2.1 units a day, or about 63 units in 30 days.
The real number is higher, because the tank also loses heat while it waits. This loss is what the BEE star label measures. CAG, a consumer group, explains that the stars come from the standing loss: the power a full geyser uses in 24 hours when nobody draws water. More stars means less of this loss.
CAG also says each 12 °C you lower the thermostat saves 3% to 5% of the water heating cost. It gives 60 °C as the setting to use.
Is a Gas Geyser Safe in a Bathroom?
No, not in a closed bathroom. A gas geyser burns LPG, and in a room with no fresh air it makes carbon monoxide. You cannot see or smell this gas. In The Tribune, consumer writer Pushpa Girimaji says carbon monoxide from gas water heaters has killed many people in India over the last 20 years.
The same article says the warning on these geysers reads "for use in well-ventilated areas only and not in closed bathrooms." The rule is to fit a gas geyser outside the bathroom, in a place with good air flow. Many Gurgaon flats do not have such a place.
Winter makes this worse. People close the window and keep the exhaust fan off to keep the bathroom warm. If your gas geyser is inside the bathroom, keep a window open and the exhaust fan on during every bath. An electric geyser on a correct socket and earth wire removes this risk.
How Does Gurgaon's Hard Water Damage a Geyser?
Hard water has a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium. When it is heated, these minerals stick to the element and the tank as white scale. Scale keeps heat in the element and away from the water, so heating is slow and the element can burn out.
Gurgaon has this problem in many areas. Square Yards quotes the Central Ground Water Board's Groundwater Chemical Quality Bulletin, 2024: 38.46% of Gurugram samples had total dissolved solids (TDS) above 2,000 mg per litre. Hard water is a common complaint where homes use borewell water. Our customers often ask for a geyser that can handle "400 TDS" water.
On TechEnclave, one user wrote that scale "got coated to the insides of the internal tank" until an engineer cleaned it. Racold advises a service every six months and a new anode rod at regular intervals. This rod corrodes in place of the tank. How often it needs a change depends on your water.
What Do You Need to Fit or Repair a Geyser?
The plumber and electrician need these parts. Prices on HandyPanda as of 5 November 2026:
- 2 connection pipes (geyser pipe), one for cold water in and one for hot water out: ₹80 each for 18 inch.
- 1 angle valve on the cold line: from ₹250.
- Teflon tape: ₹16.
- L-hook geyser fasteners to hang the tank on a concrete wall: ₹31 each.
- A 16 A top plug: ₹60 to ₹126 across Girish, Anchor and Havells.

Fit the pressure release valve from the geyser box on the cold water inlet, and keep its outlet open. Use CPVC, not PVC, for the hot line in the wall. Our CPVC vs PVC guide explains why.
HandyPanda delivers these parts and geysers to eligible addresses in Gurugram, Dwarka and Noida. The app shows the delivery time for your address.
Other Common Geyser Questions We Get
How many fasteners does a geyser need? One L-hook for each hole in the geyser's wall bracket. A bracket with two holes needs two.
What is a tikona element? An element with a triangle-shaped mounting plate. A round element has a round plate. The new one needs the same plate shape and watts as the old one.
Which MCB does a geyser need? A 2000 W geyser draws about 8.7 A and a 3000 W geyser about 13 A. Ask your electrician to match the MCB to the wire. Our wire gauge guide lists the sizes.
How much does a new geyser cost? As of 5 November 2026, a 15 L Crompton geyser costs ₹5,720 and a 15 L Racold geyser ₹8,650. A 3 L instant geyser costs ₹2,400 to ₹2,689.
Is an electric geyser safer than a gas geyser? It makes no carbon monoxide, so it is safer in a closed bathroom, with a correct earth wire and socket.
