Electrical Safety Standards in India: ISI, HRFR, and BIS Explained

·5 mins read

Why Electrical Safety Standards Matter

Electrical fires account for a significant portion of residential fires in India. Many of these are caused by substandard wiring, uncertified switches, and counterfeit products that don't meet safety specifications. Understanding the key certifications helps you identify genuine, safe products and avoid dangerous fakes. It's the simplest way to protect your home and family.

ISI Mark (BIS Certification)

The ISI mark is issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and is mandatory for many electrical products sold in India — including wires, switches, MCBs, and plugs. The ISI mark confirms that the product has been tested and meets the relevant Indian Standard. Every ISI-marked product carries a license number (CM/L number) that can be verified on the BIS website. Always check for this mark before buying.

HRFR: The Wire Safety Standard

HRFR stands for Heat Resistant Flame Retardant. HRFR-rated wires have insulation that resists heat up to 85°C (vs 70°C for standard PVC) and self-extinguishes if it catches fire instead of propagating the flame. HRFR is now the recommended minimum standard for all residential wiring in India. The insulation is also lead-free and halogen-free in premium variants, making it safer for the environment and indoor air quality.

FR vs HRFR vs ZHFR

FR (Flame Retardant): Basic fire-resistant insulation. Self-extinguishes but not heat-resistant beyond standard temperatures. HRFR (Heat Resistant Flame Retardant): Higher temperature tolerance plus flame retardance. The current standard for residential wiring. ZHFR (Zero Halogen Flame Retardant): Premium grade — emits no toxic halogen gases when heated. Used in hospitals, data centres, and high-occupancy buildings. For most homes, HRFR is the right specification.

Other Certifications to Know

BEE Star Rating: For energy efficiency of appliances, fans, and ACs. Higher stars mean lower electricity consumption. IP Rating: Indicates protection against dust and water ingress for switches and outdoor fixtures. IP44 is minimum for bathrooms; IP65+ for outdoor use. NABL Accreditation: For testing laboratories — products tested at NABL-accredited labs have more reliable certification.

How to Spot Counterfeit Products

Counterfeit electrical products are a serious safety hazard. Check: ISI mark should be embossed, not just printed on a sticker. Verify the CM/L number on the BIS website. Buy from authorised dealers — not roadside vendors. If the price seems significantly below market rate, it's likely fake. HandyPanda sources all electrical products from authorised brand distributors, guaranteeing ISI certification and genuine quality across Gurgaon.
